Eugène Gautier was born in Vaurigard, then still outside of Paris. He studied at the Conservatory in Paris. Fromental Halévy was his composition teacher and François Habeneck taught him the violin. He won several prizes including a first Prize for violin in 1838 and a second Prix de Rome in 1842. He joined the orchestra of the Opera in Paris and later the Société des Concerts du Consevatoire. From 1846 to 1852 he was the conductor of the Théâtre italien. He was the organist of the Saint-Louis-d’Antin church in Paris from 1846 to 1856. From 1864 to 1872 he taught harmony at the convervatory and after that he taught the history of music until his death.

Gautier mostly wrote ballets and comical opera's, including "La Bacchante" in 1858. In 1868 he received the Légion d’honneur. He died in Paris in 1878.

28/2/1853Napoleon III and Eugénie attend a performance at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. They were received by Jules Seveste, the new director. The program included the premiere of the ballet "Le lutin de la vallée" with music by Eugène Gautier. Eugénie was pleased and gave the ballerina Marie Guy-Stéphanie a diamont bracelet. [Napoleon III Bonaparte]
4/11/1858Premiere of "La Bacchante" by Eugène Gautier. The libretto was written by Adolpe de Leuven and Arthur de Beauplan. Marie Cabel performed the title part. Her performance was appreciated, but the comical opera was performed only three times because the main tenor fell ill.
