Hans Holt was the son of a glassmaker. He was educated at the Akademie für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien in Vienna and debuted in 1930 at the Volkstheater in Vienna.

In 1936 he made his first movie. His first appearance on the stage in Germany was in 1938 at the Renaissance-Theater in Berlin. For decades he was engaged at the Theater in der Jozefstadt in Vienna. He appeared in over 80 movies, next to Paula Wessely, Hans Moser and many others.

In later years he could mostly be seen on television. In 1973 he was in the series "Die Schöngrubers" together with Marika Rökk and during the eighties he was in the series "Ich heirate eine Familie".
