Carl Wery came from a Huguenot family. He worked as an industrial salesman and a wood company, where he became the director. Nonetheless he decided to go to the stage and took acting lessons with Fritz Ulmer. In 1929 he debuted in Bielefeld as Faust. After two years in Münster he moved to Berlin, where he worked for the Renaissance-Theater and the Schillertheater. From 1934 until 1948 he was engaged at the Kammerspielen in Munich.

In 1932 he made his movie debut, but only after the war he had more important parts. Often he collaborated with his wife Erna Fentsch who wrote the screenplays for his movies. In 1960 he appeared with Annie Rosar in "Am Galgen hängt die Liebe". He 1971 he ended his career for health reasons. He died in 1975.
