Stella Duckworth was the daughter of Herbert Duckworth and his wife Julia Jackson. Her father died in 1870 and her mother married Leslie Stephen in 1878. Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell were her half sisters born from this marriage. In 1895 her mother died and as a result Virginia suffered her first nervous breakdown. Stella took over the household at that time. On april 10th, 1897 she married the politician Jack Hills (1876-1938). Shortly after their honeymoon she unexpectedly died herself, aged only 28.
