Victor Brauner was a sculptor and painter of surrealistic pictures. He attended the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest and first exhibited solo at the Galerie Mozart in Bucharest in 1924. In 1925 he went to Paris but he returned to Bucharest the next year. In 1930 he settled in Paris where befriended Brancusi.

In Paris Yves Tanguy intorduced him to the surresalists but his work met with little success. From 1935 to 1938 he lived in Bucharest again. Back in Paris he lost an eye in a fight in 1938. When the war broke out he fled to the south of France and to Switzerland. In 1945 he returned to Paris. In 1954 and 1966 he exhibited at the Biennale in Venice. He died in Paris in 1966.
