Maria Keverich was the daughter of Johann Heinrich Keverich (1701-1759), the head cook and overseer of the kitchens for the Elector of Trier at Schloss Philippsburg in Ehrenbreitstein. On 30 January 1763 Maria married Johann Georg Leym, who worked for the Archbishop of Trier. They had a child, but her husband died in 1765.

In 1767 she married Johann van Beethoven, who was a court musician in Bonn. He was also a drinker. They had seven children. After their first son Ludwig died, they named their second son - the famous composer - Ludwig as well.

She was only forty years old when she died of tuberculosis in 1787. Her grave was rediscovered at the Old Cemetery in Bonn in 1932. Her birth place is now a museum, the Mutter-Beethoven-Haus.
