René Deltgen was the son of a chemist. He studied acting in Cologne and in 1934 he was engaged at the Theatre in that city. After a year in Frankfurt am Main in 1936 he went to Berlin where he worked under Eugen Klöpfer at the Volksbühne. He also appeared at the Schillertheater. His movie career started in 1935 in "Das Mädschen Johanna" (1935). He appeared in many movies and the nazis used him for propaganda purposes. After the war he was sentenced to two years of imprisonment in Luxembourg but he served only part of his sentence. He was able to continue his career in Germany both in movies and on the stage. During the 1960s he appeared in many television series. Shortly before he died he appeared in the "Heidi" series. Deltgen was married to the actress Elisabet Scherer, with whom he had three children.
