Leading Czech playwright of the 1820s. He studied philosophy and medicine in Prague and in 1819 he became a professor at a gymnasium in in Hradec Králové.

He wrote historical novels in the style of Sir Walter Scott, among them the successful "Tocník" (1828). Klicpera plays were important for the development of Czech theatre. He wrote comedies, vaudeville, comedies and historic plays. There were elements of patriotism in his work.

In 1848 he took part in the revolution and in 1850 he became schoolmaster of a gymnasium in Prague. The authorities pensioned him in 1853.
