Son of an Italian mother and a Russian father. In 1923 he went to South Africxa, where he studied at the Academy of Arts in Kaapstad. In 1939 he returned to Europa and settled in London. He visited Henry Moore and studied his work.

Because of the war with Germany he was arrested in 1940 and sent to Canada. In 1944 he married the graphical artist Elisabeth Shaw and after the war they returned to Germany. In 1952 he travelled to Moscow for study and in 1956 to Italy. In 1973 he received the Käthe-Kollwitz-Preis of the DDR.

His work can be found at the former concentrations camps of Buchenwald and Sachsenhausen.
