Herbert Sandberg studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Breslau with Otto Müller. From 1928 onwards he worked in Berlin as a draughtsman and author of satirical caricatures.

He was arrested by the nazis in 1934 and was imprisoned in Zuchthaus Brandenburg and concentration camp Buchenwald until 1945. After the war he returned to Berlin where he was cofounder of the satirical magazine Ulenspiegel. In 1957 he travelled to Italy with René Graetz. In 1972 he became a professor.
