Elisabeth Shaw was born in Belfast and raised in England. She studied at the Chelsea School of Art in London (1938-1940). She worked as a graphical artist in London before she married René Graetz in 1944.

In 1946 they moved to the DDR, where she worked as an illustrator for magazines and books. She also wrote her own children's books. In 1959 she portrayed 43 members of the Academy of Arts. She received the Art Prize of the DDR and several other prizes.

In 1992 she was buried at the Irish Sea. There's a memorial stone for her next to the grave of René Graetz in Berlin.
