Cornelia Goethe was the slightly younger sister of Johann Wolfgang Goethe. She learned Latin, English, Italian and French. After Goethe left for Leipzig she kept a secret diary of letters in French to he friend Katharina Fabricius from 1767 to 1769. In it she gave a damning view of many affluent citizens of Frankfurt am Main. It was preserved, while her letters to Goethe were lost since he burnt them. When she was 23 years old she married Goethe's friend Johann Georg Schlosser. She lived with him in Emmendingen, where he was the best paid civil servant. But the marriage wasn't happy and she felt lonely in Emmendingen. She almost died during the birth of her first daughter and she didn't survive the birth of a second daughter in 1777.
