Johann Caspar Goethe was the son of Friedrich Georg Goethe and Cornelia Walther. He is best known as the father of the world famous Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Johann Caspar Goethe studied law in Giessen and Leipzig. He worked at the Reichskammergericht in Wetzlar. Around 1740 he travelled to Italy and in 1741 he returned to Frankfurt am Main. He paid for the title of imperial councillor in 1742, but after emperor Karl VII died nothing came of a career as an imperial diplomat. He married Catharina Elisabeth Textor in 1748. She was the daughter of another imperial councillor. They lived from the income of his fortune in a large house in the city center of Frankfurt am Main. In 1749 their son Johann Wolfgang was born and in 1750 and from their other five children only their daughter Cornelia survived until adulthood. After French troops occupied Frankfurt am Main in 1759 the city commander Count Thoranc stayed at his house for several months. Around 1770 he lost his mental facilities and he suffered strokes in 1779 and 1780. He died in 1782 in Frankfurt am Main and left his son a significant fortune.
