The symbolist painter Luicien Victor Guirand was the son of a traveling salesman. He studied under Fernand Cormon at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, specializing in pastels. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris and at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.

In 1903 he decorated the Molière theatre in Sète. He married the actress Marie Thérèse Piérat in 1906 and he led the life of a bohemian. Reportedly, he participated in the development of military camouflage during the First World War. He had received the Légion d'Honneur in 1910 and he was promoted to the rank of Commander in 1935. In 1937 he became the president of the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. During the Second World War he was in favour of artistic collboration with German artists and he criticized 'Jewish art'.
