Franz von Alt was a son of the painter Jakob Alt. He was educated by his father and at the Academy of Art in Vienna by Leopold Kuperwieser and Josef Danhauser.

From 1844 onwards he worked as an independent artist. He travelled to Tirol and Italy and he also visited St. Petersburg, Moscow, Paris and London. He was a friend of Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach.

Franz Alt painted over 2,700 watercolours and oil paintings. He died in 1914 in Vienna and was buried with his father at the Zentralfriedhof in Vienna.
