Oldest son of Leopold Ullstein, who published the Berliner Zeitung. Together with his brothers Louis founded the Ullstein-Buchverlag in 1903 (his father had died in 1899). He modernized the production process in American style.

During the 1920s he helped Ullstein become a leading publisher with authors like Bertolt Brecht, Carl Zuckmayer, Ödön von Horvath, Karl Hauptmann and Heinrich Mann.
