Franz Ullstein was the third son of Leopold Ullstein, the founder of the Ullstein Verlag. He studied las in Berlin, Heidelberg and Freiburg im Breisgau. He trained as a lawyer and in 1894 he joined his father's company. From 1897 he was a co-owner. On 23 March 1900 he married Charlotte Cäcilie Maria Lehmann (1877-1926). In the same year he became the editor of the Berliner Illustrierten Zeitung and he later he was involved in the management of all the daily newspapers of the publishing house. In 1921 Ullstein Verlag became a stock corporation and a syndicate was agreed upon between him and his four brothers. Franz Ullstein became the first chairman of the board. In 1927 the five brothers were painted by Willy Jäckel. His wife died in 1926 and he was 63 years old when he married Rosie Goldschmidt in 1929. She agreed to his proposal because she hoped for a powerful position At the same time she was into an affair with the nazi diplomat Karl Ritter. The Ullstein family wanted to get rid of her and accused her of being a spy for France and Russia. She was declared innocent by a court in Berlin and the divorce that followed made her rich. In 1932 he married Dolly, Baronesse Kirchbach. She was born in Chernivtsi in Bukovina After the nazis came to power the Ullstein family was forced to sell the company in 1933/1934. Franz Ullstein lived in retirement in Berlin until he emigrated to the USA in 1938. There he died in a street accident in New York City.
