John Holloway Sanders was the Chief Architect of the Midland Railway. It seems he was the son of Joseph Sanders, who was the general manager of the Midland Railway from 1849 to 1853. John already worked for them in 1845 and became the Chief Architect in 1850. His station buildings on the Settle to Carlisle railway were all build in the same style that was known as the 'Midland Gothic' or 'Derby Gothic' style, even if they were hardly traditionally 'Gothic. The standardization of the station buildings resulted in a form of corporate identity. Bath Green Park Station and Sheffield Station were two of the many stations that were built according to his designs. In 1872 he became a Felllow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. After his death in 1884 Charles Trubshaw (1840-1917) succeeded him as Chief Architect of the Midland Railway. |
