Benjamin Webster was the son of a dancing master from Sheffield. He appeared as Harlequin and in small parts at Drury Lane before he took leading parts at the Haymarket Theatre from 1829 onwards. He was the manager of the Haymarket from 1837 to 1853 and he built the Adelphi Theatre that opened in 1859. Later he took control of other theatres in London as well.

He was a well respected character actor and also the author or adaptor of many plays. In 1874 he left the stage. The actor Ben Webster (1864-1947) is his grandson.
