Leopold was the youngest son of Ferdinand Georg August von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld-Koháry (1785-1851). His mother was the Hungarian princess Mariá Antoniá von Koháry. His brother Ferdinand II became king of Portugal. In 1845 the Spanish regent Maria Christina suggested that he should marry her daughter Isabella II, but the French King Louis Philippe objected to this because he wanted her to marry a member of his own family Leopold rose to the rank of major general in the Austrian Army. He lived for years with the singer, actor and Constanze Geiger before he married her morganatically at the Schottenkirche in Vienna. She was a friend of the composer Johann Strauss (the Younger) and he supported their marriage by dedicating a waltz to them. The friendship between Leopold, Constanze en Johann still existed in the 1880s. The pair lived in Vienna, Gotha and at the villa Constanze in Paris. They were friendly with Alexander Girardi, Sarah Bernhardt, Josefine Gallmeyer and others. Leopold died in Vienna and was buried in the Cucal Mausoleum at the cemetery on the Glockenberg in Coburg.
