Maria Theresia became Archduchess of Austria at the death of her father Charles VI when she was only 23 years old. Although she was never crowned she was referred to as Empress of Austria. She also became Queen of Hungary in 1741 and Queen of Bohemia in 1743. During her reign she was always actively involved in state affairs and Austria went through many social and economic reforms. But her country also lost several battles to Prussia and was forced to some territorial concessions. On 12 Feb 1736 she had married to Francis of Lotharingen, who was elected roman emperor Francis I and crowned in Frankfurt on October 4, 1745. Among her sixteen children was Marie-Antoinette, the unfortunate queen of Louis XVI of France.
