Ingeborg Bachmann was the daughter of the elementary school teacher Matthias Bachmann (1895-1973) and his wife Olga, born Haas (1901-1988). From 1945 to 1950 Ingeborg studied philosophy, psychology, law and German studies in Innsbruck, Graz, and Vienna. In 1946 her short story "Die Fähre" was published. In her doctoral thesis she was critical of Martin Heidegger. In 1945 she fell in love with Jack Hamesh, a Jew from Vienna who had Berlin who had returned to Austria as a member of the British troops and had questioned her about her political past. In 1946 he left for Palestina and their correspondence ended after 1947. After that she had a love affair with the author Hans Weigel, whom she had met on 5 September 1947. A love affair with the poet Paul Celan followed in May 1948. From 1951 to 1953 she was radio editor at Rot-Weiss-Rot in Vienna. In 1952 she wrote her first radio play, "Ein Geschäft mit Träumen". She received the literary prize of the Gruppe 47 for her volume of poetry "Die gestundete Zeit" in 1953. She lived in Italy with the composer Hans Werner Henze on Ischia. In 1955 she met the politician Henry Kissinger in Washington and their love affair lasted for several years. After Max Frisch wrote her a letter they met in Paris. they lived together near Zurich and from 1960 in Rome. She had affairs with Hans Magnus Enzensberger (from 1959 to 1960) and with Paolo Chiarini and her relationship with Frisch ended in March 1963. In 1963 she received the Georg-Büchner-Prize. In 1965 she returned to Rome. She became addicted to pills and alcohol and her literary output diminished. In 1971 she published "Malina" as the first volume of a planned trilogy "Todesarten". In 1973 she fell asleep with a cigarette and suffered severe injuries from the fire she started. She died at the Sant Eugenio Hospital. |
