Otto Bachmann grew up in Luzern. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule of Max von Moos (1903-1979). He moved zo Zurich where he worked for the Althaus advertising agency until he gave up his job to become a freelance painter. In 1943 his "Faust" portfolio brought him recognition with the public. He often travelled in Europe and supported himself by working at travling circuses. This explains why harlequins and juggles found their way into his work.

Otto Bachmann was a good chess player and a very sociable person. In 1965 he married Angelika Gesemann. He received the Premio Cultura prize of the City of Ascona in 1995. He died there the next year.
