Thomas Combe was the son of Thomas Combe senior, who was a printer, bookseller and newspaper proprietor in Leicester. He worked for his father and for Joseph Parker in Oxford. After a brief spell in London he joined the family business in Leicester. After his father died around 1836 he moved to Oxford, where he joined the University Press in 1837. He soon acquired shares in the business and was a senior partner by 1851. Together with his wife he collected art and John Everett Millais became a friend and painted portraits of his family. He died in 1872 and was buried at St Sepulchre's Cemetery, not far from Oxford University Press. Family Wife: Combe, Martha (1840-1872) Related persons was a friend of Millais, John |
