François Fabié was the son of the miller in Durenque, Aveyron. he did well at school and entered the École Normale Spéciale de Cluny in 1868 after he was awarded a scholarship. He graduated in 1870 and afterwards he became a teacher and a poet. From 1872 he was a literature teacher in Toulon and there he married. His first volume of poetry "La Poésie des bêtes" was published in 1879.

He became a professor at the Lycée Charlemagne in Paris in 1883. He published "Le Clocher, poèmes de Rouergue" in 1887. Later in his career het was the director of the École primaire supérieure Colbert in Paris. He received several literary prizes and in 1908 he received the Légion d'honneur. In that year he retired to La Valette-du-Var near Toulon. He continued his poetical work and published "Moulins d'autrefois" in 1914 and "Les Paysans et la guerre" in 1921.

He died 1928 and was buried in Toulon. His birthplace is now a museum.
