Louis Alexandre Désiré Abdelal was the son of Janissary leader Michel Abdelal (c1763-1828). He had worked with the French during the Egyptian Expedition and was forced to flee to France afterwards. Louis joined the French army in Algeria in 1831 as a translator. In 1840 he was promoted to lieutenant and in 1842 to First Lieutenant. In 1842 he was awarded the Legion of Honour. In 1845 he became captain of the first Spahi corps. He distinguished himself in several battles.

From 1851 he commanded the troops in Aumale. He married his niece Marie Joséphine Mathilde Agoub on 28 April 1853. In 1854 he saw action during the Battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War. In 1859 he was promoted to colonel and in 1870 he became a Brigadier General. During the Franco-Prussian War he was called from Algeria to France where he commanded a brigade during the French victory at the Battle of Saint-Laurent-des-Bois. He held further commands until his retirement in 1879. Abdelal died three years later. He was buried in the grave of his father in Marseille.
