Raluka Musurus was born in Constantinopel into a family of humanists from Crete. Shortly after her birth the family moved to London where here father Constantine Musurus was to represent Turkey as ambassador. Later she liked to mention that she used to sit on the knees of Queen Victoria. She was a talented pianist who had studied with Camille Dubois, the last student of Chopin. The Polish composer and Prime Minister Ignacy Paderewski dedicated several works to her. In 1874 she married Grégoire Bibesco Bassaraba de Brancovan, the son of Georges Dimitri Bibesco, the pretender to the throne of Wallachia.
