Franz Bock was the son of the bath attendent Franz Joseph Bock. His mother Agnes, born Dotru, died early. Franz studied theology in Bonn from 1846 to 1849. After that he studied at the seminary in Cologne and he was ordained a priest in 1850. After a position in Krefeld, he was transferred to St. Alban's Church in Cologne in 1854. There be also became the curator of the newly opened Archbishop's Diocesan Museum in 1855. A government grant enabled him to travel in Europe for two years. After his return he moved in a networrk of patrons of religious art. In 1862 he was appointed honorary canon at Aachen Cathedral. There he supported local sculptors and other creators of sacred art. He tried to found the first arts and crafts school in Aachen but his attempts failed. He donated parts of his art collection to the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin, the Musée de Cluny in Paris, the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen aand the South Kensington Museum in London. After his death the rest of his collection went to the city of Aachen. |
