Jacques Curie was the son of the physician Eugène Curie (1827-1910). The famous physicist Pierre Curie was his younger brother. Together they demonstrated the piezoelectric effect in 1880. In 1883 Jacques was appointed professor of Mineralogy at the University of Montpellier.
He taught and researched in Algeria from 1887 to 1889 but the rest of his life he lived in Montpellier. He married Marie Virginie Masson and they had a daughter, Madeleine, and a son, Maurice. In 1903 he was appointed professor of physics in Montpellier and he held this chair until he retired in 1925.
