Abram Lyle was an apprentice in a lawyer's office before he joined his father's cooperage business. He married Mary Park (d.1881) in 1846 and they had five sons and a daughter. Together with John Kerr he developed a successful shipping business in Greenock. Transporting sugar was part of his business and with four partners he bought the defunct Greenock Sugar Refining Company in 1865. It became the Glebe Sugar Refinery.

After John Kerr's death in 1872 Lyle sold his shares and started a new company together with his three sons. This was located at East Plaistow in London near the company of his rival Henry Tate. From 1876 to 1879 he was Provost of Greenock. He died in 1891 and he was buried in Greenock Cemetery. In 1921 his company merged with that of Tate and became Tale & Lyle.
