Eduard Beit came from a family of Sephardic Jews from Hamburg. He was the son of the chemist and physician Ferdinand Beit (1817-1870) and his mother Johanna was a daughter of the banker Seligmann Ladenburg from Mannheim. He recieved a commercial training in Hamburg, London, Paris and New York. In 1892 he started working as a representative of the Lazard Speyer-Ellissen bank in Frankfurt am Main.

He married Hannna Louise Speyer, the sister of the banker James Speyer (1861-1941). In 1896 he became a partner in Lazard Speyer-Ellissen and after George Speyer's death in 1902 he became its owner. As a philanthropist he contiuned the works of George and Franziska Speyer. In 1911 he donated 1,250,000 marks to found the University of Frankfurt. In 1922 he was made a honorary citizen of Frankfurt am Main.
