Democrito Gandolfi was the son of the painter Mauro Gandolfi (1764-1834). He was trained at the Reale Accademia di Brera in Milan. In 1829 the City of Milan commissioned two statues from him. In 1836 he opened a studio in Corsia dei Servi. After his father Mauro died he made a bust of him for the family tomb on the Certosa cemetery. In 1837 he exhibited his bust of Princess Albani and the next year his bust of Countess Gismondi. He executed many more commissions in Bologna, Brescia, Mantua and other places before his death in Bologna in 1874. He was buried in the same tomb as his father and his grandfather Gaetano (1734-1802). Family Father: Gandolfi, Mauro |
