Max Michael attended the Art Academy in Dresden from 1841. In 1846 he went to Paris, where Henri Lehmann and Thomas Couture were his teachers. In the early 1850s he moved to Italy and he mostly lived in Rome until 1870. He painted genre pictures from Italian folk and monastic life. In 1875 he became a member of the Academy of Arts in Prussia and a teacher at at Art Academy in Berlin. Among his students were Flix Borchardt and Curt Aghte. He died in 1891 in Berlin.
