Marie Anne Carolus-Duran was the eldest of the five children of the painters Carolus-Duran and Pauline Croizette. The portrait that her father painted of her in 1874 is now at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. Marie Anne married the playwright Georges Feydeau on 14 October 1889. The first decade of their marriage was happy and they had four children betwen 1890 and 1903. Her father painted her again in 1889 (Palais des beaux-arts de Lille) and in 1897.

Feydeau's gambling habits lost him large sums of money and Marie Anne was said to have become bitter and spent too much money. He left home in 1909 amd moved into the Hotel Terminus in the Rue Saint-Lazare. The divorce followed in 1916.
