Jean Baptiste Boyer entered the army in 1793 as a volunteer. Her served in the Army of the Rhine and joined the Army of Italy in 1794. He served as second lieutenant aide-de-camp to General Lannes. He distinguished himself at Saint-Cloud during the coup d'État of 18 Brumaire. On 14 June 1804 he received the Légion d'honneur. In 1805 and 1806 he served in the Grande Armée. In 1807 he was promoted to Mayor. In 1807 he served in Poland and in 1809 in Germany. On 16 December 1810 he became a Knight of the Empire. He held several further assignments and was promoted to brigadier general on 28 September 1813. He commanded the cavalry of the 5th corps of the Grand Armée when he lost a leg during a charge at Freiburg in Saxony-Anhalt and he died of his injuries in Leipzig.
