Alexina Sattler was the daughter of the surgeon Robert Sattler (1855-1939). Her nickname was Teeny because of her low weight at the time of her birth. She wanted to be an artist and went to Paris in 1921. She studied sculpture with Constantin Brancusi. In 1923 she first met Marcel Duchamp. In 1929 she married the art dealer Pierre Matisse, a son of Henri Matisse. They had three children. In 1949 they separated after Pierre had betrayed her with Patricia Kane Matta and as a result of the divorce settlement she became the owner of several important paintings. In 1951 she met Duchamp again. They both loved chess and a romance resulted in a marriage in 1954. They stayed together until Duchamp's death in 1968. After that she moved to Villiers-sous-Grez near Paris where she created an archive that documented Duchamp's life and work. She was a close friend of Jasper Johns and John Cage, who had been friends of her late husband as well. She died in 1995 and was buried with Duchamp.
