Moriz von Dietrichstein was the son of Karl Johann von Dietrichstein-Proskau-Leslie (1728-1808). In 1791 he entered the Austrian army, and he became adjutant to General Mack (1752-1828) in Naples in 1798. They were both taken prisoner by the French. He was released in 1800. On 22 September 1800 he married Therese von Gilleis (1779-1860). They had three daughters and a son. In 1805 he was adjutant to Mack in Ulm. In 1815 he became the tutor of the Duke of Reichstadt, and he held this position until 1831. He was the director of the Court Theatre from 1821 to 1826 and in 1826 he became the director of the Imperial Court Library. In 1834 he became a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. He was appinted chief chamberlain in 1845 and retired in 1848. After the death of his nephew Joseph Franz von Dietrichstein-Proskau-Leslie (1798-1858) he became the 10th Imperial Prince of Dietrichstein. He died in 1864 in Vienna. The famous pianist Sigismond Thalberg believed that he was the son of Dietrichstein from his affair with Maria Julia Bydeskuty von Ipp, who later married Baron Wetzlar von Planlkenstern, but this is not in line with his birth certificate.
