Leopoldo Casella was the son of the violinist Ettore Casella, who came from Barbengo. Leopoldo studied in Parma with Attillio Brugno and in Frankfurt am Main he studied composition with E. Engesser and conducting with F. Bassermann. In Paris he studied under Robert Casadesus.

He worked as a painist for Radio Berna from 1928 to 1932. In 1932 he joined the Radio Svizzera Italiana (RSI) and he worked there for almost fourty years. Together with Mario and à Giocondo De Signori he formed the Trio di Lugano. As a pianist he also performed abroad.
