Sir William Casement was the son of George Casement and Elizabeth Montgomery. He was a Major-general in the service of the East India Company and served as the Military Secretary to the Governor-General of India. He served for 47 years without interruptions and he fought in the 3rd Mahratta War.

On 21 July 1803 he married Anne Browne, a daughter of general Sir George Sackville Browne (d.1828). He is a great uncle of the revolutionary politician Roger Casement. He died of cholera in India and he was buried in Calcutta. A memorial was erected for him at Kensal Green Cemetery in London.
