Catherine Caroline Thévenin was the daughter of the goldsmith Thomas Thévenin. Her mother was Jeanne Françoise Ferrier. She was a student of the painter Léon Cogniet. Léon Cogniet ran a workshop and she took over the workshop for ladies together with her sister-in-law Marie Amélie Cogniet at the rue des Marais-Saint-Martin. They ran it together from 1840 to 1860. She exhibited at the Salon in Paris between 1835 and 1855.

On 28 April 1865 she married Cogniet. Her sister Rosalie was a painter as well. Cogniet died in 1880 and Catherine died in 1892. Rosalie died the next day. They were both buried in Cogniet's grave at Père Lachaise on 17 February 1892.
