Maurice Bernhardt was the illegitimate son of the actress Sarah Bernhardt and the Belgian Henri Prince de Ligne. He wrote several plays in which his mother performed. She entrusted him with the management of the Théâtre de l'Ambigu (1882-1883), the Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin (1883-1884) and the Théâtre Sarah-Bernhardt. In 1887 he married the painter Princess Maria Teresa Wirginia Klotylda Jablonowska, known as Terka. They had two daughters, Simone (1889-1962) and Lysiane (1896-1977), who became an actress as well as an author. In 1915 Marie-Ernestine Appoullot became his second wife. He died in 1928 in Paris.
