Helene Hanke was the daughter of a train driver. She was an early student of dancer Mary Wigman in 1920. She joined Wigman's group and appeared at the opera of Frankfurt am Main from 1921 onwards under the name of Bambula. There she caught the eye of the art critic Hildebrand Gurlitt. They married in 1923 and she ended her active career.

She was known as Lena Gurlitt and she was the mother of Cornelius Gurlitt (1932-2014) and Benita Gurlitt (1935-2012). In 1958 her husband died and she inherited his art collection. After her own death in 1968 the collection came into the the hands of her son Cornelius.
