Mark Frith's father was head melter at the Sanderson Brothers stell works in Sheffield. He joined that company before he started his own business in 1842. His brother and his father joined him and by 1852 Thomas Firth & Sons had expanded and owned the largest rolling mill in Sheffield. Further expansion followed and in 1871 the so called "Woolwich Infant" gun was casted.

In 1874 Firth was elected mayor of Sheffield. He created Firth Park for the town of Sheffield in 1875. For himself he built a mansion at Oakbrook, Ranmoor. In 1879 he opened Firth College were art and science were taught. It was integrated in Sheffield University in later years.
