Kate Berry was the daughter of the composer John Barry and the actress Jane Birkin. She grew up in France where she was raised by her mother and Serge Gainsbourg. Her contact with her father was only restored after Birkin separated from Gainsbourg in 1980. In 1987 she had a son with Pascal Huon de Kermadec, Roman de Kermadec.

She worked as a fashion photographer for Vogue and for The Sunday Times Magazine. But in her youth she developed an addiction to drugs and alcohol that she couldn't get rid of. She was the founder of the Aide et Prévention des Toxicodépendances par l’Entraide in 1994. On 11 December 2013 she fell from her appartment on the fourth floor at the rue Claude-Chahu in Paris. It is unknown if it was an accident or suicide.
