Céline Montaland was the daughter of two comedians. She was taught by her father and entered the stage as a child. When she was six years old she appeared at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal and Labiche wrote a play for her in 1850. When she was nineteen years old Victorien Sardou gave her important roles at the Théâtre du Gymnase. After that she was engaged at the Palais-Royal and at La Gaîté. In 1871 she toured in the USA where she appeared in several comic operas in New York. After her return she appeared in Bordeaux and Marseille in 1872. She appeared at several theatres in Paris before she joined the Comédie-Française in 1884 and in 1888 she became its 320th sociétaire. She never married and she died in 1891 in Paris after she attended her daughter who suffered from the measles. |
