Charles Hutton Gregory was the son of the mathematician Dr Olinthus Gilbert Gregory (1774-1841) who was a teacher at the military academy in Woolwich.

Charles was a consulting engineer for several railway companies, based in Ceylon, Trinidad and other locations. In 1842-1843 he introduced semaphore signalling in England. He was a member of the Channnel Tunnel Committee in 1882.

In 1894 he married the actress Fanny Stirling, but she died the following hear. He lived until 1898 and died in London.
