Helena Wolinska was born Fagja Mindla Danielak. She came from a Jewish family. She married Wlodzimierz Brus, but during the German occupation of Poland she was separated from him. She managed to escape from the Jewish Ghetto, and she joined the communist People's Guard in 1942. She became the mistress of its commander Franciszek Józwiak and married him because she thought that Brus was dead. But in 1944 she met Brus again. She left Józwiak married Brus again in 1956.

She played an important part in the Stalinist show trials in the 1950s. She may also have been involved in the arrest and execution of Polish resistance fighters during the Second World War. In 1956 she was fired as prosecutor. After she supported dissidents, she was expelled from the communist party together with her husband. In 1971 they left for England. Poland asked for her extradition in 1999, 2001 and 2004. She died in 2008 in Oxford.
