Giuseppe Capogrossi studied law and graduated in 1922. But soon afterwards he joined Felice Carina's studio to study painting. He often travelled ot Paris between 1927 and 1931 and worked with Corrado Cagli and Emanuele Cavalli in a figurative style. In 1933 they created the Manifesto del primordialismo plastico. In 1930 he took part in the Biennale di Venezia.

Between 1945 and 1948 he painted in an abstract geometric style. In 1949 he changed his style and his paintings were dominated by comb signs. In 1950 he exhibited at the Galleria del secolo in Rome. From 1950 to 1951 he was a member of the group Origin. He died in Rome in 1972. In 1974 his work was shown at a major retrospective at the Galleria nazionale d'arte moderna in Rome.
