Gaetano Mattioli studied music in Venice and in Parma. He started his career in Italy, but he moved to Bonn where he was engaged as the first violinist in 1774 and as concertmaster in 1777. In Germany he married the dancer Isabella Barbieri. In 1784 he returned to Italy. His wife died in 1807 and Gaetano died in 1815. Their tomb at the Cimitero monumentale della Certosa di Bologna was designed by the architect Angelo Venturoli and the sculptor Giovanni Putti.
