Carlo Mondini was the son of Giovanni Antonio Mondini, who was professor of logic, medicine, anatomy and surgery from 1708 to 1738. His mother was Barbara Zambonini. Carlo studied philosophy and medicine in Bologna and he graduated in 1757. He worked a that university as a teacher of practical medicine and was responsible for medical dissections. In 1782 he succeeded Luigi Galvani as Professor of Anatomy in 1782 and he held it until his death.

He was knwn for his work on the the pigmentation of the eye and on ear malformations. Mondini had twelve children and his son Francesco (1786-1844) continued his research. Carlo Mondini died in 1803 and was his grave is marked by a mural painting from Petrionio Rizzi and Bartolomeo Vagliani.
